Meet the Artist

Brian Yongo

I was born in Nairobi, Kenya and moved to the United States at the age of 9. From a young age, I knew my brain was wired a little bit differently. I would have highs and lows of feeling anxious, and would experience the symptoms of ADHD. I had always assumed everyone felt this way, however, as I got older, it got worse.

In my adult life, I tried everything from therapy to medication to try to manage my symptoms, but nothing seemed to help. Upon reflection, I realized that the only things that seemed to help quell my anxiety were cooking and taking photographs. I began taking photography at the age of 17. It started as simply taking pictures of friends and family  as a way to capture a moment that would not be possible to create again.

I loved that every picture had a story behind them. My oldest and fondest memories are ones where I am cooking with my parents and looking through the family photo albums. It was during those times that everything felt right.

Photography and cooking both ease and quiet my mind, and I love to spend every possible moment that I am able doing one or the other.

I would like to extend my thanks to the Heal Collective for the incredible opportunity to perhaps inspire at least one person to pick up a camera or cook a wonderful meal as a way to ease their own minds and create or capture a beautiful moment with those close to them.
